What Food Trends Are We Likely To See This Year?

It’s always interesting to see what foodie trends are likely to rear their heads in the future, as it gives us all lots of wonderful ideas for new recipes and dishes. If you love being adventurous in the kitchen, you might want to stock up on the likes of black garlic, amchoor and zhoug, all of which are expected to soar in popularity in 2021.

This is according to Waitrose, at any rate, with the Independent reporting that the supermarket also expects to see dashi, Ethiopian flatbreads, kalamansi, queen olives and sambal come very much to the fore over the next 12 months.

Some of these names may sound a little exotic and unfamiliar, but that’s part of the fun of trying something new. Kalamansi is a citrus fruit that sits somewhere between a kumquat and a mandarin, and is very common in Filipino dishes.

Dashi, meanwhile, is an important part of Japanese cuisine, primarily made of kombu – dried sheets of sea kelp that give that delicious umami flavour to dishes.

And amchoor is a seasoning that goes perfectly in curries and chutneys, made from dried and powdered green mangoes, while zhoug is a blend of herbs and spices that originates from Yemen.

Do a bit of research to see how you could start incorporating these into your weekly meals. You’re going to have a great time in the kitchen, trying everything and working out how to use all these new and exciting ingredients.
